Regarding Pauls comments about scripture being useful, the context (I believe) is the Old Testament.

I think you give good advice about writing!
But I dont think that interpretation has that much to do with Gods sovereignty
I think it has more to do with the type of God you need for the forgiveness of your sins

Dear undisfellowshiped
I’m still looking for the word trying in that passage. I would be troubled, by a frustrated God, wouldn’t you? I don’t believe God tries to do anything. He just does them!
I believe man can make some choices, and he always chooses sin, and so is responsible for it. According to scripture, he can not choose God or to do good (Romans 3:10,11).
Remember Adam (not God) condemned mankind to hell by eating the fruit after God told him what would happen. The real mystery is, why would God choose to save some by his grace? Romans 2:4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

Hi ellderwho
You said: "However, as the "BIBLE" says, Gods word is useful in teaching, rebuking, etc... Should I, in this setting where doctrine gets batted around , not want to keep in check, a persons veiws' verses what the BIBLE actually teaches."
It only works when the person you are talking to believes the entire Bible!

Hey UnDis
Can I take a stab at that verse? 2 Peter 3:9 "but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."
The "us" I believe, refers to the Church, not Humans. So I believe this passage shuold be read with that in mind. Like this: "but is long-suffering toward us (the Church), not willing that any (of us, the Church) should perish, but that all (of us, the Church) should come to repentance.
Remember, he is writing this letter to tell the beloved to be patient, and I think, to wait for the completion of the Church.
The New Living Translation says it this way: "The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent."
Time does not bring EVERYONE to repentance, but God will let time pass to bring ALL of his choosen to repentance.
I don't know how that lines up with Calvin, but it works for me.

I think aguest believes like a JW. She seems to think that harmonizing the Bible (rightly dividing the Word of Truth) is done by talking more or showing that she has more verses on her side than someone else. She doesn't seem to understand that if all the scripture don't agree, than you don't have truth.
Some day she may see that it doesn't matter what I say, you say or what she says. It only matters what GOD says!
the scriptures are some of the oldest books in the world known to man with dates included now how do you suppose that can be, that these books have survived this long, many thousands of years ?
hmmmmmm i don't see any other book on the shelf as long as this book not even any other history book as far as that goes, now i wonder why a book that supposedly is nothing more than a lie or uninspired as some of you put it would survive that long.
i wonder how christianity has lasted as long as it has if it is all just a lie.
heathen
In the EXPLANATORY INTRODUCTION of The Doctrine And Covenants (mormon scripture) 4th paragraph it states: "...He was told in this vision that the true Church of Jesus Christ that had been established in New Testament times, and which had administered the fulness of the gospel, was no longer on the earth. ...it was shown to him that God had a special work for him to do on the earth, and that through him the Church of Jesus Christ would be restored to the earth.
Also, what do you think the Re formation was all about?

There are many, just look at the mormons and the claims of Joseph Smith!
there appears to be "new light" in the latest watchtower magazine (june 1st 2003 issue).
several watchtower publications for the last 50+ years have said that the united nations (u.n.) organization ("the scarlet-colored wild beast" of revelation) would definitely be the organization that will carry out jehovah's judgment on "babylon the great" (false religion), and then, under satan's [gog of magog's] direction, the united nations organization would become "greedy", and try to attack the remaining remnant of the "anointed" jehovah's witnesses and their companions, the "great crowd" of "other sheep", and then jehovah and jesus would destroy the united nations organization, along with everyone else who was not a jehovah's witness.

I think it's intresting that by its' very nature, the watchtower, is mans' attempt to save himself from God's Wrath. They are sure trying to save themselves now.

I wonder if the "United Nations" are being repaced by "the nations of Christendom". See Isaiah's Prophecy--Light for All Mankind II page 292 par 6.
